When I'm not beating down fools with my mighty fists, I often sit atop a tower with my Breach Forge Gun and rain death to any tankers that get within 300m of me.
I also have a tanker alt, with ~9m SP invested into tanks, and I know what being on the receiving end of a Forge Gun feels like.
In my opinion, Forge Guns are in a good place against tanks. If you have more than two Forge Gunners even just sort of working together, any tank on the field is going to have a bad time. Even just a single skilled Forge Gunner is enough to be a threat to tanks, hitting that weakspot is devastating, especially with a Breach FG. I'm talking about blowing-them-up-in-one-shot devastating, unless their hardener is up or if they're stacking plates and/or extenders.
Whenever I get hit by a Forge Gun on my Tank alt, I usually active my shield hardener and GTFO. Those thing hurt, and if they're too high up, you can't aim at them, and all you can do is run. They're great at area-denial, and still have great potential to actually blow tanks up.
The key is high Alpha Damage. Assault FG are great for barraging them with shots, but they can easily activate their hardener after the first hit and speed off before you can destroy them. Breach Forge Guns are great at taking them by surprise. One shot to the weakspot and they won't have time to active their hardener because they're most likely dead. If they do survive, they're going to have very little health, so a follow up shot anywhere to the tank body will take them out even with their hardener on.
Although, I'm not sure how drastically the 1.8 damage mod and proficiency changes will effect Forge Guns. Right now, they're great, but come 1.8, I'm not so sure.
